Yambio Police Arrest One Suspect, Pursue Three Others

Police in Yambio say they have arrested one suspect connected to the alleged gang rape of a young woman and have launched a search for three other suspects who remain at large.

Local authorities say the incident happened along Masia Road in Yambio town, where the survivor was reportedly attacked and raped by four men. The case is being handled as an active criminal investigation.

Community Leader Warns of Rising Gender-Based Violence

John Henry, a community leader in Yambio, confirmed the reported incident and said police moved quickly, with one suspect now in custody and efforts continuing to locate the other three.

“One suspect is currently in police custody, and police are still searching for the others. All of them will be arrested. Cases of gender-based violence are increasing in Yambio,” Henry told Sudans Post.

Henry said women’s safety remains a pressing concern, especially for those moving alone or at night. He also linked reported increases in rape and other gender-based violence to substance abuse among some youth.

“Women moving alone at night are at high risk, and drug abuse among some youth is contributing to rape and GBV cases,” he said.

Survivor Receives Medical Care and Psychosocial Support

A source at the Ministry of Gender, speaking anonymously due to authorization concerns, said the survivor is receiving medical treatment as well as counselling and psychosocial assistance.

“The woman is under treatment with support from Eve Organization. She is receiving counselling and psychosocial care,” the source said. Authorities said the survivor’s safety and dignity are being prioritised during support services.

    Western Equatoria Police: Investigation Ongoing

Western Equatoria State Police Commissioner Maj. Gen. Phillip Madut Tong confirmed the reported case and said investigators are pursuing those still missing after the initial arrest.

“The incident occurred in Yambio town, where four men allegedly raped a woman. One suspect has been arrested, and police are pursuing the remaining three. Investigations are ongoing,” Tong said.

Police said the detainee is cooperating with investigators. They added that operational efforts remain focused on locating the remaining suspects and preparing the case for judicial proceedings.

Police Condemn Sexual Violence, Call for Public Cooperation

Police in Yambio condemned the alleged attack and said sexual and gender-based violence will not be tolerated. They said suspects linked to rape and other serious offences will be taken to court.

“Those involved in criminal activities, including rape, will be arrested and taken to court to face the law,” police said. Authorities appealed for public cooperation, including information that could support arrests.

Activists and community leaders say sexual violence remains a major concern in parts of Western Equatoria State, urging stronger enforcement, wider community awareness, and sustained assistance for survivors.

Police reiterated their commitment to ensuring all those implicated are brought to justice, while the investigation continues and the search for the remaining suspects remains underway.
