University of Juba Radio Station Renovation Starts
The University of Juba has launched a major renovation of its official radio station, aiming to reposition the facility as a modern broadcasting and training hub for students and the wider community, according to Eye Radio.
The work formally began this week after a handover ceremony held at the university, bringing together university officials, UNESCO representatives, and contractors expected to deliver the refurbishment (Eye Radio).
Modern Studios and New Broadcasting Equipment Planned
Project details point to a full refurbishment of two radio studios, alongside the installation of updated broadcasting equipment and wider improvements to production and transmission capacity, as described by officials involved in the handover.
For a campus-based station, such upgrades can be pivotal, not only for sound quality and reliability, but also for shaping routines around editorial planning, newsroom workflows, and live programming standards.
Journalism Students to Gain Hands-On Radio Training
Once completed, the station is expected to operate as a practical laboratory for journalism students, supporting training in radio production, professional reporting, and live broadcasting, in an approach designed to link classroom learning with industry practice.
“The upgraded studios will not only enhance learning but also help our students engage meaningfully with their communities through professional media practice,” said Dolphina Roba, Deputy Dean at the School of Journalism, Media, and Communication Studies (Eye Radio).
UNESCO and JICA Support for Public Service Media
The initiative is led by UNESCO with support from Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) South Sudan. It is presented as part of a national effort to strengthen community and public service media, with an emphasis on reliable information and open dialogue as the country approaches the electoral period (Eye Radio).
UNESCO officials, according to the report, framed the project as a pathway to empower young communicators and reinforce educational institutions, with the broader aim of nurturing a more informed and engaged society (Eye Radio).
Educational Programming and Expected Return to Full Operations
The university radio station is described as a longstanding pillar for educational programming. After the renovation, it is expected to resume full operations later this year, maintaining its role as a platform for student voices and community issues (Eye Radio).
In practical terms, the investment signals confidence in campus media as both a learning space and a public-interest service, where training, community engagement, and professional standards can develop side by side.
