UNMISS-Funded Training Boosts Bentiu Policing
Bentiu’s skyline now features a purpose-built academy where South Sudanese officers will sharpen investigative skills under UN supervision. The $50,000 complex, funded by UNMISS and built by Action for Conflict Resolution, was inaugurated Friday, marking a tangible investment in Unity State’s fragile security architecture.
Human Rights and Gender Take Centre Stage
Mission representative Denis Fuh Chenwi told attendees the centre aligns with UNMISS’s mandate to reinforce justice, rule of law, and civilian protection. Training modules will integrate human rights, gender sensitivity, and community policing, areas where international observers have previously urged improvement across South Sudan’s forces.
Eyes on South Sudan’s First National Elections
Acting police commissioner Maj. Gen. Gordon Machar said the facility’s classrooms will host specialised courses on election security and evidence-based investigations, skills deemed vital ahead of the country’s long-anticipated polls. “The support from UNMISS is helping us work effectively,” he remarked, welcoming the prospect of professionally run ballots.
Shared Space for a Recovering Community
Beyond uniformed ranks, the new hall is open to civil society meetings, youth forums, and conflict-resolution workshops, reinforcing what Chenwi called “a platform for unity within Unity State.” Residents expressed hope that consistent training and dialogue can soften lingering war-time mistrust and stimulate local development.
