    The African Union Peace and Security Council concludes field mission to Juba, South Sudan, from 10 to 12 August 2025

    Juba, 12 August 2025: The Delegation of the Peace and Security Council (PSC) of the African Union (AU), comprising the representatives of the fifteen (15) PSC Members, namely, Algeria, Angola, Botswana, Cameroon, Cote d’Ivoire, Democratic Republic of Congo, Egypt, Eswatini, Equatorial Guinea, Ethiopia, The Gambia, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Tanzania and Uganda, undertook a field mission to Juba, South Sudan, from 10 to 12 August 2025.

    The Mission was led by H.E. Ambassador Dr. Mohamed KHALED, Permanent Representative of the People’s Democratic Republic of Algeria to the AU and Chairperson of the Peace and Security Council for the month of August 2025. In Juba, the PSC held consultations with many stakeholders ranging from the Chairpersons of the National Election Committee and National Constitutional Review Committee; Faith Based Organisations, CSOs, Think Tanks and the Media; the Troika, namely the United States of America, United Kingdom and Norway; the European Union, United Nations Mission in South Sudan, Reconstituted Joint Monitoring and Evaluation Commission, and Intergovernmental Authority on Development; national Cabinet Members and High-Level National Transition Committee.

    The PSC paid a courtesy call on H.E. Salva Kiir Mayardit, President of the Republic of South Sudan and engaged on the ongoing implementation of the Revitalized Peace Agreement, and elections scheduled to take in December 2026, to end the transition period. The PSC commended the commitment expressed for the completion of the transition process. The PSC stressed the need to ensure the full implementation of the remaining tasks in the Revitalized Agreement; called for a permanent ceasefire; protection of civilians and humanitarian workers.

    The PSC expressed its unwavering support towards the organization of elections in December 2026, marking the end of the transition in South Sudan. The PSC called for an inclusive political high-level dialogue among the political leaders for an amicable resolution of the current political situation in the country.

    Overall, the PSC field mission was undertaken as an expression of the AU’s solidarity with the people of South Sudan. It also reaffirmed the AU’s continued dedication to support South Sudan to end the conflict and ensure a successful completion of the transition period.
