Regulator sets new oversight structure
South Sudan’s communications regulator says it has established a new body to oversee the country’s international gateway services and the national data center.
According to the National Communication Authority, Director General Rizig Dominic Samuel chaired a meeting with MGI Communications AG to formally constitute the Gateway Services and Data Center Oversight Committee.
Governance and accountability at the centre
The authority says the committee is tasked with strengthening governance, accountability, and institutional control over both gateway services and the national data center.
In remarks shared by the regulator, the stated goal is to tighten oversight of strategic communications assets while keeping operations aligned with national priorities.
Digitised revenues and upgraded infrastructure
The committee’s priorities, as outlined by the National Communication Authority, include digitising revenue streams linked to the South Sudan International Gateway.
The regulator also points to modernising infrastructure to better support digital systems, alongside ensuring operations meet national sovereignty and security requirements.
Economic development and tech self-reliance goals
The National Communication Authority says enhanced regulatory oversight and digital revenue collection are expected to help national communication resources contribute to economic development.
In the authority’s framing, stronger controls and more reliable collection mechanisms are also linked to wider ambitions of technological self-reliance.
MGI Communications AG’s role in the system
MGI Communications AG, described by the authority as a Swiss-based international telecommunications firm, manages South Sudan’s international gateway services and critical data center infrastructure.
The company is said to be focusing on digitising national revenue systems, upgrading gateway technology, and expanding digital access in underserved areas across the country.
