Rising Waters Overwhelm Fangak County
Fangak County now lies beneath a vast sheet of water, its farms erased and villages isolated. Families paddle between tree tops while livestock cling to narrow ridges, officials report.
Information Minister Nyamar Lony Thichiot Ngundeng described the scene as “particularly dire,” stressing that many households have no shelter, food or dry ground available.
Spillover to Pigi and Twic East
The current flood wave has also inundated Pigi and Twic East counties, sweeping through cropland and cutting road links. Local leaders say displacement figures rise daily as new villages succumb to the waters.
Government Evaluates Relocation Strategy
Jonglei’s cabinet is studying the transfer of the most exposed communities to higher ground within the state, and, if necessary, to Malakal in neighbouring Upper Nile. “Relocation remains the safest option we have,” Ngundeng noted on Monday.
Partnerships for Emergency Response
State officials pledge close coordination with national authorities, aid agencies and development partners to deliver both immediate relief and longer-term solutions. Food, tents, medicines and boats top the priority list, the minister underlined.
OCHA Data Reveal Wider Crisis
A United Nations snapshot dated 2 October 2023 estimates that 639,225 people across 26 counties in six states face flood impacts, with Jonglei and Unity representing 87 percent of those affected (OCHA). “Safeguarding lives is our overriding concern,” Ngundeng stated.
