Deadly Aweng Land Clash: Chiefs Suspended

Aweng Payam land dispute turns deadly

Authorities in Twic County, Warrap State, say a land ownership disagreement in Aweng Payam escalated into violent clashes that left two people dead, including a woman. Officials describe the incident as a sharp reminder of how quickly local tensions can spiral into insecurity.

Twic County suspends three chiefs amid inquiry

A resolution from the Office of the Executive Director of Twic County says three traditional leaders have been suspended: Executive Chief Muor-ter Riing Yuot, Executive Chief Anei Manyang Anei, and Sub-Chief Deng Anei. The document links the suspensions to allegations of incitement and involvement in the dispute.

Commissioner says decision aims for independent investigation

Twic County Commissioner Mabior Marup says the suspensions are intended to clear the way for investigations without interference and to reduce the risk of further escalation. “This decision was taken in the interest of peace and justice, especially because the dispute resulted in the loss of lives,” Marup said.

Interim leadership and court process announced

Commissioner Marup says interim arrangements have been put in place, with Executive Chief Kuol Deng Angui appointed to temporarily replace Muor-ter Riing Yuot. He adds the dispute is being left to the courts while the suspended chiefs remain out of office, given the suspicions around incitement.

Arrests reported as prime suspects named

The commissioner says several arrests have already been made, including three individuals described as prime suspects. He alleges they colluded to trigger the fighting linked to the contested land, as county authorities pursue accountability alongside the broader inquiry.

South Sudan land conflicts persist despite Land Act

Officials and observers frequently note that land disputes remain a persistent challenge across South Sudan, particularly in rural areas where land is tied to identity, inheritance, and local power. While the South Sudan Land Act exists, complaints about acquisition procedures and enforcement gaps are widely reported.

Authorities hope suspensions help restore calm in Aweng

County authorities say the suspensions and ongoing investigations are expected to help restore calm in Aweng Payam. They also present the action as a caution against the misuse of leadership positions to mobilise supporters and inflame community disputes.
