Cholera Crisis: Israel Airlifts Lifesaving Aid to South Sudan

Israel Activates Emergency Airlift to Juba

Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar has activated MASHAV for an emergency shipment to Juba. The decision, announced Monday, underscores Jerusalem’s intent to deepen practical ties with African partners during health and refugee emergencies.

South Sudan Faces Cholera and Refugee Pressure

South Sudanese clinics are battling a fresh cholera wave, with suspected cases rising along the Nile corridor, health officials confirm. Simultaneously, an influx of people fleeing Sudan’s war has stretched food and fuel stocks in several states.

The combined pressure, experts warn, could disrupt fragile peace dividends secured since the 2018 revitalised agreement, making outside help vital for community resilience.

Medical Kits and Water Tech at the Core of Aid

Foreign Ministry notes the consignment will carry rehydration salts, IV fluids and antibiotics, plus compact water-purification units designed for rural boreholes. Gloves, masks, fortified food parcels and cholera-prevention hygiene kits round out the manifest (Israeli Foreign Ministry).

Joint Work by MASHAV and IsraAID on the Ground

Implementation will be joint. IsraAID teams already embedded in Western Equatoria will coordinate with the Health Ministry in Juba on distribution logistics, according to the NGO.

MASHAV technicians are scheduled to conduct on-site training in water treatment, a measure analysts say strengthens local capacity beyond the immediate crisis.

Rumours of Gaza Resettlement and Official Denials

The announcement follows reports that South Sudan might host displaced Gazans, a claim Juba has categorically rejected as “baseless” (Government of South Sudan).

CNN and AP sources said exploratory discussions occurred, yet both Israeli and South Sudanese officials publicly prioritize humanitarian collaboration over resettlement politics.
