Walgak Aid Suspension in Akobo West County

Save the Children says it has temporarily suspended humanitarian operations in Walgak, in Akobo West County, after two separate incidents in which its clearly marked humanitarian vehicles were taken. The organisation framed the pause as a protective measure for operational integrity and access.

Vehicles Taken, Then Returned: What the Statement Says

In a statement issued on Saturday, Save the Children South Sudan said that earlier this year three vehicles were taken without consent. The organisation reported that the vehicles were later returned after engagement with relevant local actors.

Two More Vehicles Still Missing, Logistics Strained

Save the Children added that two additional vehicles were taken more recently and have not yet been recovered. It said that while no staff members were harmed in either incident, the loss of vehicles has severely constrained its capacity to deliver life-saving assistance.

    Humanitarian Principles and Neutrality Emphasised

“Safe and reliable access to essential humanitarian assets is fundamental to our operations,” the organisation said, linking logistics disruption to reduced delivery of critical aid. It reiterated it is neutral and independent, and argued that taking humanitarian assets undermines humanitarian principles.

Conditions for Resuming Operations in Akobo

Save the Children said it has suspended activities in Akobo while seeking assurances that humanitarian operations, staff and assets will be respected. The organisation said it remains committed to the people of Akobo and is ready to resume assistance once conditions allow safe, unhindered access.
