Northern Bahr el Ghazal Budget Vote: What Passed
The Northern Bahr el Ghazal State Legislative Assembly passed a SSP 40.5 billion budget for the 2025/2026 fiscal year after its third reading on Tuesday, according to the legislature.
The proposal was tabled by the State Minister of Finance, Dut Akot, and adopted after deliberations among lawmakers, the Assembly said.
Appropriation Bill Process: Speaker to Governor
Following approval, the Appropriation Bill is set to be forwarded to the Speaker, who will transmit it to the Governor for assent and enactment into law, the Assembly indicated.
After the vote, Information Committee Chairperson Garang Deng Dut said the legislature had fulfilled its constitutional role in the budget-making process. “The allocation was done, the Assembly passed it and handed it over to the Madam Speaker,” he said.
Education and Health Lead Budget Allocations
The Assembly said social service sectors received the largest share of the budget.
The ministries of Education, Health, Rural Development and Animal Resources were allocated a combined SSP 16.7 billion, or 41.3 per cent of the total, reflecting an emphasis on essential service delivery, according to the legislature.
Spending Lines: Other Ministries and Development Projects
Other ministries were allocated SSP 15.6 billion, representing 38.6 per cent of the total budget, the Assembly said.
The remaining funds were earmarked for development projects across the state, according to the legislature.
Funding Plan and Timeline for Implementation
State officials said the 2025/2026 budget is expected to be financed through locally generated revenue and transfers from the national government.
Officials added that the fiscal plan is intended to support service delivery, strengthen key institutions and promote development despite ongoing economic challenges. Once signed into law by the Governor, implementation is expected to begin with the new fiscal year.
