South Sudan Statement on Somalia Sovereignty
The Government of the Republic of South Sudan says it has reaffirmed full support for the African Union (AU) and the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) positions on the sovereignty of the Federal Republic of Somalia.
In a press release issued on Friday by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Juba said it firmly aligns itself with regional efforts to uphold Somalia’s sovereignty, unity and territorial integrity. (Eye Radio)
AU and IGAD Positions on Territorial Integrity
According to the statement, South Sudan supports the AU and IGAD stance on Somalia’s sovereignty and stresses the importance of respecting Somalia’s internationally recognised borders.
“The Republic of South Sudan reaffirms its commitment to the unity and territorial integrity of the Federal Republic of Somalia within its internationally recognized borders,” the statement said. (Eye Radio)
Legal Frameworks Cited by South Sudan
The government added that its position is consistent with regional and international legal frameworks, including the African Union Constitutive Act, as well as other international laws and treaties referenced in the release.
Officials presented the message as part of a rules-based approach to interstate relations, placing emphasis on recognised borders and shared commitments within Africa’s multilateral institutions. (Eye Radio)
Horn of Africa Cooperation and Security Context
The statement also highlighted South Sudan’s adherence to principles of regional cooperation and its stated preference for collective approaches to political and security matters affecting the Horn of Africa.
