Integrity Call: Aweil’s New Governor in Spotlight

Northern Bahr el Ghazal Gets New Leadership

Thousands converged in Aweil on 23 December to welcome Governor Charles Madut Akol, officially ushered into office after his recent appointment by President Salva Kiir. The atmosphere blended celebration with cautious expectation.

    Minister Ateny Champions Integrity

Information Minister Ateny Wek Ateny seized the podium, urging the new administration to anchor decisions in integrity and transparency. “Many lobby for power only to undermine it,” he warned, recalling political upsets witnessed across South Sudan.

He advised tight teamwork within the state cabinet and inclusive consultations with chiefs, youth and women to safeguard Northern Bahr el Ghazal from factional rifts that have hampered programmes elsewhere.

    Presidential Trust in Akol’s Tenure

Conveying President Kiir’s message, Ateny portrayed Akol as a disciplined cadre since the liberation struggle. The presidency, he said, expects the governor to consolidate gains made by his predecessor and polish the state’s national image.

    Open-Door Policy and Online Responsibility

Ateny highlighted his own practice of hiring across county lines and keeping phones on round the clock, urging Akol to replicate an open-door ethos that builds trust and deters claims of favoritism.

He equally cautioned residents against defamatory posts, reminding them that South Sudan’s cybercrime law now carries penalties for online abuse, and encouraging constructive digital dialogue on development.

    Governor Outlines First Roadmap

Thanking the crowd, Governor Akol promised broad consultations before unveiling policies. He listed hunger relief, border security and the influx of refugees from Sudan as immediate concerns requiring joint efforts with counties and humanitarian partners.

Akol confirmed a state-wide tour early next year to witness local challenges firsthand and shape evidence-based interventions that, he said, “must unite rather than divide” Northern Bahr el Ghazal.
