Peace Rally in Pading Draws Crowds

Thousands of residents from Nyirol County converged on Pading over the weekend to hear Governor Dr Riek Gai Kok outline his vision for healing, unity and local development in Jonglei State. Elders, youth leaders and clergy shared messages of reconciliation.

    Peace Push Faces Symbolic Slip

Midway through the cultural performances, observers noticed the South Sudanese flag flying upside down beside the podium. Photos captured the error, quickly spreading online and overshadowing parts of the day’s carefully choreographed peace messaging.

    Governor’s Swift Apology

On Tuesday, the Governor’s Office released a communiqué acknowledging full responsibility for the mishap and calling it an unintentional lapse amid intense logistical preparations (Governor’s Office statement). The note expressed “deep regret” and saluted citizens for their patience.

Officials reiterated their respect for national symbols and stressed that the inverted flag should not be read as disrespect or political signal. Governor Kok, sources say, has instructed protocol teams to review procedures before upcoming state events.

    Legal Voices Weigh In

Former education minister and lawyer Gordon Koang Bar labelled the incident a potential constitutional issue, noting that an upside-down flag can signify distress or disloyalty (Gordon Koang Bar). He urged clarity in laws governing state ceremonies to avoid similar controversies.

    Public Debate and Digital Echoes

Facebook and X threads filled with questions about protocol training, with some users calling the slip a minor mistake and others demanding disciplinary measures. Influencers from Juba used livestreams to remind officials that symbols carry weight, especially during high-profile peace gatherings.

    Lessons for Protocol Teams

Analysts argue that the episode offers an opportunity for civic education on flag etiquette and for strengthening event logistics across South Sudan’s states. Observers expect revised guidelines to appear before the next round of grassroots peace tours planned by Jonglei authorities.
