Derik Cultural Festival Returns in 2025

The vibrant Derik Cultural Festival is set for its fifth edition at the University of Juba from 15 to 22 November 2025. Organisers promise a week of music, debate and exhibitions reflecting South Sudan’s evolving cultural narrative.

A Theme Centered on Women’s Legacy

This year, the focus shifts to women under the banner “Women of South Sudan: A Legacy of Struggle and Inspiration”. Chairperson Mathiang Cirilo says the decision underlines a central belief: acknowledging women’s leadership is essential to any cultural renaissance.

    Pioneers in the Spotlight

Four trailblazers headline the honours list. Education stalwart Professor Julia Akeer Duany opened doors for countless girls. Diplomat Dr Salwa Gabriel broke new ground in foreign service. Musician Vivian Nyachan gave voice to national identity through melody. Actress-broadcaster Marjorie Elinana revolutionised drama and radio.

    Supporting Heritage and Growth

The festival commemorates the late cultural champion Derik Uya Alfred, remembered for bridging communities across Sudan and South Sudan through art. Sponsors including Digital Telecommunication Company and the Centre for Strategic and Policy Studies will fund workshops, book fairs and film screenings.

    Looking Ahead

Organisers hope the celebration sparks mentorship networks for young women and fresh research on gendered histories. “We want the narratives told on stage to ripple into classrooms and boardrooms,” Cirilo notes, framing the week as both tribute and springboard.
