    Dutch–Jonglei Alliance on Flood Resilience

A high-level Dutch delegation met Jonglei Governor Dr Riek Gai Kok in Bor on 20 October to review joint flood-resilience programmes and explore fresh support for vulnerable communities.

    Formal MoU in Sight

Led by Karem Busek of VNG International, the team praised progress made since earlier interventions and proposed a formal Memorandum of Understanding to scale up technical assistance and financing for early warning systems.

    Consistent Support Since Liberation Era

Governor Kok welcomed the initiative, noting that Dutch backing has been consistent ‘from the liberation era up to today’ and confirming state readiness to align local structures, from boma to municipality, with international best practice.

New Water Plant Promises Cleaner Supply

In the capital, a Dutch-funded water treatment plant is set for commissioning, promising cleaner supplies for Juba and other urban centres and demonstrating the broader scope of Netherlands-South Sudan cooperation on water governance.

    Local Officials Highlight Community Benefits

Acting Minister of Roads and Bridges Jacob Mayom and Bor County Commissioner Ateny Pech echoed the urgency of bolstering defences, stressing that stronger dykes, drainage and rapid alerts will translate into ‘lasting relief’ for citizens repeatedly displaced by seasonal floods.

    Long-Term Capacity Building Vision

National authorities have signalled full backing for the partnership, while VNG affirms its long-term vision of empowering local governments through tailored training, project management and policy advice that remain in place after international teams depart.
