Clashes Test Unified VIP Protection Unit

Five days of skirmishes between SSPDF and SPLA-IO elements inside the Unified VIP Protection Unit rattled the Abyei Administrative Area, established to shield South Sudan’s leaders under the 2018 peace deal.

Authorities report no further violence, yet the episode exposed lingering fault lines inside the still-forming national army.

Women and Children Shelter at UN Base

Information Minister Yohana Akol told Eye Radio that 79 relatives of the withdrawing soldiers, mostly women and children, took refuge inside the United Nations Interim Security Force for Abyei compound after gunfire echoed near their homes.

    Local Administration Coordinates Safe Passage

“Distances are long and transport scarce; we will facilitate their movement,” Akol explained, noting that buses and fuel have been earmarked by the administrator’s office.

Families may head to Athony, Amiet, Aneet or cross the Kiir River into Unity State, depending on personal preference and perceived safety.

    UNISFA Logistics Bolster Relocation

UN peacekeepers have mapped routes, secured water points, and readied medical teams in case the convoy faces road hazards or lingering cattle-raiding militias.

    Quiet Returns, Unresolved Issues Persist

Abyei town awoke to calm streets, traders reopened stalls, and schools resumed lessons, yet community elders urge dialogue between the rival uniforms to prevent future flare-ups.

Regional analysts argue that swift civilian relocation demonstrates a maturing partnership between local authorities and UNISFA, but stress that long-term stability will hinge on fully integrating national forces.
