    Tragic Discovery in Juba

Juba awoke to disquieting news on 26 September after police recovered the body of Atoc Angam Lang, daughter of South Sudan’s Deputy Speaker, from a hotel swimming pool.

Witnesses at the riverside hotel reported routine evening activity before authorities cordoned off the area shortly after midnight.

    Family Keeps Composure

Relatives gathered at the family home in Juba, balancing grief with calls for patience.

Deputy Speaker Mary Ayen has yet to issue a public statement, focusing on funeral arrangements and cooperating with detectives.

    Investigation Gains Momentum

Aunt, Hon. Adual Bol, told Eye Radio, “I will not give the full details because the investigation is still ongoing, but we know the girl was found in the pool.”

Criminal investigators are reviewing security camera footage from several hotels along the Nile corridor, hoping to reconstruct the final moments.

No foul play has been ruled out, and preliminary forensic results are expected this week, police spokesperson Daniel Justin confirmed.

    Safety Concerns at Leisure Venues

South Sudanese social media buzzed with questions about the adequacy of lifeguards, emergency lighting and guest monitoring in Juba’s leisure venues.

Hotel managers pledged to reinforce safety protocols, citing the shared responsibility to protect patrons amid the city’s rapid hospitality boom.

    Condolences From National Leaders

Parliamentarians observed a minute of silence on 27 September, describing Atoc as “a promising young citizen whose future was cut short.”

President Salva Kiir’s office released a note of sympathy, urging calm while the investigation proceeds to “its logical and transparent conclusion.”
