Uganda-South Sudan Border Tension Sparks Rapid Talks

    Border Alert in Kajo-Keji County

Reports of Uganda People’s Defence Force units crossing into Kajo-Keji County last week jolted officials in Central Equatoria, reviving memories of prior border frictions. The state cabinet convened urgently, branding the move a sovereignty breach demanding swift, calibrated action.

    Kampala–Juba Diplomacy in Focus

Juba has historically balanced firm rhetoric with pragmatic outreach to Kampala. Officials signal they favour a diplomatic corridor, citing the 2019 bilateral commission that resolved a similar standoff without escalating troop deployments or disrupting vital trade along the Yei-Moyo road.

    Voices from Central Equatoria Government

“Peaceful dialogue should be expedited,” Acting Information Minister Jacob Aligo told journalists after Governor Lt. Gen. Rabi Mujung Emmanuel’s cabinet meeting, adding that Khartoum-mediated channels remain open. Regional analysts interpret the wording as a deliberate bid to de-escalate.

    Market Attack Fuels Security Jitters

Tensions are compounded by last week’s armed raid on Mogiri cattle market. Authorities fear the incident could trigger reprisals from the Greater Pibor Administrative Area and Jonglei State, regions still nursing grievances after years of cyclical cattle-related violence.

    Land Grabbing Adds to Volatility

Inside Central Equatoria, Mangalla district faces a different pressure: reported land grabbing and extortion blamed on some flood-displaced families from Jonglei. State Housing Minister David Morbe tabled a memo urging a clear land policy and exclusive oversight by his ministry.

    Policy Steps and Expected Outcomes

The cabinet endorsed the draft policy, instructing surveyors to halt informal demarcations until legal frameworks take shape. Observers say prompt action could ease rural tensions, protect investors and reassure neighbours that Juba can simultaneously guard borders and govern land.
