    Diversity and Inclusion Statement

    Effective Date: 02 August 2024

    1. Our Commitment to Inclusivity

The South Sudan Herald News Network is dedicated to creating a news platform that reflects the diversity, resilience, and voices of South Sudan — from Juba to all states (Central Equatoria, Eastern Equatoria, Western Equatoria, Upper Nile, Jonglei, Unity, Warrap, Northern Bahr el Ghazal, and Western Bahr el Ghazal) — and the South Sudanese diaspora worldwide.

We believe that inclusive journalism strengthens democracy, promotes understanding, and ensures that no community is left unheard.

    2. Our Values

    • Diversity of Voices – We actively seek contributions from individuals of all ethnicities, genders, ages, religions, languages, and abilities.
    • Gender Equality – We strive for balanced representation of women and men, and support the inclusion of non-binary and marginalized gender identities.
    • Youth and Elders – We value both emerging voices and the wisdom of community elders.
    • Urban and Rural Perspectives – We cover stories from major cities like Juba, Wau, Bor, Malakal, Yambio, as well as remote towns and villages.
    • Diaspora Engagement – We welcome the perspectives of South Sudanese living abroad, recognizing their role in national development.

    3. Representation in Our Coverage

    We commit to:

    • Featuring stories from all communities, including historically underrepresented groups.
    • Avoiding stereotypes and harmful narratives.
    • Giving space to different viewpoints in political, cultural, and social debates.
    • Covering issues affecting persons with disabilities, minorities, and marginalized communities.

    4. Inclusivity in Our Team

Our editorial network includes reporters, NGO workers, academics, students, community leaders, business owners, and cultural advocates from diverse backgrounds. We believe that a newsroom that reflects the society it serves produces better journalism.

    5. Language and Accessibility

    • We use clear, respectful, and non-discriminatory language in all our reporting.
    • Where possible, we incorporate local languages alongside English to reach a broader audience.
    • We are committed to making our content accessible to readers with disabilities (see our Accessibility Statement).

    6. Accountability

We welcome feedback from readers about how we can improve inclusivity in our coverage and operations.

    7. Why Inclusivity Matters

South Sudan is a mosaic of cultures, languages, and histories. By embracing inclusivity, we aim to foster unity, respect, and mutual understanding — from the markets of Bor, to the fishing villages of Upper Nile, to the diaspora communities in Nairobi, Kampala, London, and Melbourne.
