    Rising Street Crime Alarms Residents

Recent reports of late-night robberies and assaults unsettled residents of Gumba Sherikat, a rapidly growing suburb of Juba. Worried shopkeepers described masked youths roaming unlit streets, prompting urgent calls for visible policing and coordinated intervention.

    Precision Raids and Police Tactics

Between 22 and 24 September, joint units from the National Police Service and local stations executed targeted raids at identified hideouts. Major General Monday James Enoka said intelligence mapping and plain-clothes surveillance narrowed suspects’ movements before uniformed teams moved in swiftly.

    Seized Weapons and Youth Profile

Officers seized machetes, iron bars, daggers and makeshift slings believed to intimidate victims. Among 184 detainees are 16 minors and four girls, underscoring the lure of gangs for unemployed youth. “Their age profile worries us,” Enoka admitted, calling for broader social programs.

    Community Cooperation Praised

Residents cooperated by sharing tip-offs, guiding officers through maze-like alleys, and offering temporary lighting during night raids. Civic leader Mary Wani praised the “renewed trust” between citizens and police, noting that fear subsided once patrols became routine and suspects were escorted away.

    Legal Screening and Rehabilitation Plans

Investigators are now filtering arrest records, weapon traces and witness statements to classify each suspect. Those linked to violent acts will be arraigned in specialized courts, while minors may enter rehabilitation schemes. Officials insist transparency will guide screenings and eventual prosecutions.
